5 ways to land your dream job ~ testingnaija

Job search is something we all have to face sooner or later in our lives. There are many factors that make the job search process successful, but sometimes all it takes is a pure luck. If you don’t want to wait for a miracle to happen and want to take the matter in your own hands, here are 5 tips that will help you finally get the desired position.

 Choose your field
A great thing about today’s economy is that it’s never too late to switch professions. Even if you’ve spent the last 10 years working as a sales manager, but your single true passion is cooking, you can still work as a professional chef - all it takes is a lot of persistence and an ability to prove that you’re a worthy candidate. When choosing a field to work in, there are a few things to consider: what makes you happy, what you’ve always enjoyed doing, what other people often ask you to do, and what can bring you financial stability.

Find your value

When you’re surrounded by experienced and skilled competitors on your way to a perfect job, it’s easy to lose hope, but this strategy won’t take you anywhere. Instead, you should find your advantages and highlight them in your resume and during a job interview. For example, if you’re straight out of University and have zero job experience, but want to get a position in marketing or finances  , the skills you need the most are client relations, project management, information technology, and attention to detail. There is a good chance that you already have those skills, which means your job is to make them more visible.

Use networking

It’s a well known saying among HR managers that most open positions are filled before the company gets a chance to advertise them. The key is to build connections and use them to your advantage. Choose a field you’re interested in - it can be IT, engineering, or health and beauty - and visit every possible event in your field. Don’t miss a single conference or fair, find acquaintances among the employers of your dream companies, and remember to keep in touch: that way your chances of getting your dream job are much higher.

Work on your resume
Since a resume is often the first thing your potential employer sees, you should make an effort in bringing that resume to perfection. The first thing to do is to have multiple versions of the resume in case you want to apply for positions in several fields. The next step is to trim your resume and make it 1, max 2 pages long - no one has the time to read several pages of CV. Then you need to tailor it: instead of simply listing your previous education, positions and companies, highlight your accomplishments. Add a short yet detailed description of the things you’ve managed to achieve to show your worth to the employer.

Use unconventional sources
If you are exhausted of traditional ways of searching for a job, try some new ones. For example, you can befriend people who work in your field on Facebook or LinkedIn - that way you will build your professional network and will increase your chances of landing a decent position that matches your skills. You can also install the Jiji App, where you will find thousands of job offers from the leading Nigerian companies and will get a chance to post your resume for HR specialists to find out about you.
